When babies are born they don't know any words at all. In only a few years , they can speak a language fluently. It is one of the most amazing things human beings can do, and everyone is able to do it.

From very early on, babies know that language is important. At six months, they know the sound of their first names. And when people speak, babies turn their heads. It's about this age babies start to make 'cooing' sounds. From 'cooing' they soon move on to 'babbling', a kind of practice talk. Babbling babies are trying to copy the sounds of people around them. But because they're unable to use real words yet, it sounds like they are saying words with no meaning. It's not long though before they begin to use real words, and by their first birthday a baby can usually say thirty to fifty words.
